This seminar teaches students the theory and language of architectural criticism. For the fall semester, we will examine the phenomenon of the debate. As a technique of criticism, the debate brings with it a particular challenge: participants must produce a variety of arguments instead of relying on a single viewpoint. The first part of the seminar focuses on key past debates and provides students with different theories of the genre. The second part considers contemporary debates surrounding the high rise and what makes them stand out from past discussions. Students study the pro and contra arguments from the perspective of city planning and aesthetics. The goal of the seminar is to improve students’ ability to articulate positions with force and conviction. At the last meeting, students conduct a public podium discussion using arguments developed in the seminar.
