Built between 1860 and 1865, the main campus building of ETH Zürich (designed by Gottfried Semper) has undergone multiple changes and expansions throughout its history. Its interior is a chronicle of transforming function and character—the half-open arcade on the ground floor, the seminar rooms, the athletics center, the parking garages, the cafés, the libraries.

Momoyo Kajima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, of the Tokyo-based architecture firm Atelier Bow-Wow, have likened this transformation to a process of metabolism, a movement of continual change geared to the needs of the time. These Japanese architects will work together with the seminar instructors to examine the building’s forms, cycles, and rhythms. The goal is to reflect on the spatial potential of the entire structure—everything from its architecture and furniture to its relationship with the surrounding city. The seminar will encourage students to develop ideas for installations that may be used in Laurent Stalder’s spring 2013 exhibition presenting the work of Atelier Bow-Wow.
