The fifth part of the seminar series on Swiss infrastructure examines the discursive pendant to technological development: the dream of the Alpine nature. From the advent of industrialization to the present day, this dream has been an ever-present topos in the texts and work of European architects. Eclectics, regionalists, modernists, and hypermodernists have all sought to create their mirror image in, and position themselves vis-à-vis, the Alps – be it to preserve, transform, or destroy them.

The seminar investigates the cultural construction of the Alps as a development of society as a whole. For over 200 years, the Swiss have systematically measured their mountains, built roads and rails through them, imagined them politically and utilized them for tourism. The myth of nature is the implicit point of departure for the technological development of Switzerland.
