The Lausanne-based architectural firm 2b has established a distinctive position in western Switzerland’s architectural scene, with constructions featuring strong, clear forms – and an impressive record of competition victories.
Since 1998 Stephanie Bender and Philippe Béboux have been tackling complex construction projects using “stratégies urbaines concrètes” – concrete urban strategies: 2b delivers solutions to the multifaceted demands of contemporary architecture that are robust, meticulously thought-out, and transcend theoretical considerations. The Villa Beaumont town house, for instance, was conceived as a response to the impact of urban densification, while the La Tuffière cultural and community centre was planned (together with Lausanne-based NB.ARCH) as a tangible symbol of the coming together of two Fribourg municipalities: Corpataux and Magnedens. The exhibition at the ETH Zurich marks the first time the firm’s work has been presented to audiences in German-speaking Switzerland. Images, plans, models and films illustrate examples of concrete urban strategies, from the artful reshaping of public space at the Place du Molard in Geneva and the Palézieux master plan to the Les Papillons apartments for the elderly in Prangins, the La Sallaz footbridge in Lausanne, the converted, 16th-century Tour Moinat tower in Echandens and the Swiss pavilion for the ARCO international art fair in Madrid in 2003. A monograph is being published by Quart Verlag to accompany the exhibition.
