The Brick Award for outstanding architecture in brick is to be presented again this year, for the fifth time since its launch in 2004. Endowed by Wienerberger AG, the award recognizes five outstanding international projects that exemplify the incorporation of brick into modern architecture. The award criteria include innovative exterior design and skilled use of the material, though the assessment also takes account of natural integration into the surroundings, sustainability and energy efficiency. The diversity of the projects submitted testifies to the enduring
popularity of this traditional building material and its use both in classic solutions for walls and façades and via the creative deployment of everything from roof tiles to brick paving.
The exhibition at ETH Zurich offers a detailed introduction to the winning entries and, through a presentation of the projects submitted from Switzerland, provides an overview of contemporary Swiss brick architecture. Published by Callwey Verlag to accompany the Brick Award 2012, “brick ‘12” presents the winning and nominated projects with contributions from international experts.
