The Göhner housing estates are among the leading examples of spatial planning during the economic boom of the 1960s and 1970s. Between 1965 and 1980, Ernst Göhner AG constructed some 9,000 apartments in the Zurich and Geneva conurbations, all employing the same prefabrication technique. Unlike in many countries, these concrete buildings were deliberately aimed at the young middle class, offering many families spacious dwellings with access to green spaces. Changing social values and the 1973 oil crisis brought an end to the growth euphoria, and led to a radical transformation in the perception of large-scale housing developments.
This is the first exhibition and publication to deal with the striking prefabricated estates created by Ernst Göhner AG. Taking the architecture as its starting point, it is a comprehensive exploration of the Göhner phenomenon. It examines the historical and social context of the time when the estates were built and reveals the company’s system, from the initial search for suitable land, through the construction of the urban environment using standard, prefabricated elements, to the marketing of the individual flats, and vividly documents the transformation in our view of such developments from their heyday to the present day. Designed as a touring exhibition, “Göhner Wohnen” is receiving its first showing in an apartment on the Weber mühle estate in Neuenhof. A book on the project will be published by hier + jetzt in early 2013.
