Hannes Wettstein is regarded as one of the most important and innovative designers of our time. His work is simple in form and easy to use. Most of his creations are something special, even brilliant. Which perhaps explains why Wettstein, a trained structural engineering draughtsman who lived and worked in Zurich, is one of the few Swiss designers to have achieved international renown.
Now, the self-taught designer’s work is being documented and honoured for the first time with an exhibition. In the main hall of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, hundreds of hand-drawn sketches tumble from a vast projection surface, drawing visitors into Wettstein’s captivating design universe. The success that has so often accompanied his quest for archetypes is reflected in the furniture, products and interior designs on display – many of them design classics.
To accompany the exhibition, the Studio Hannes Wettstein is producing the first monograph devoted to him. “Hannes Wettstein. Seeking Archetypes.” is published by Lars Müller Publishers.
