The design for the Bagno di Bellinzona by Aurelio Galfetti, Flora Ruchat-Roncati and Ivo Trümpy was the winning project in a public competition held in 1967. The central element of the building is an extended footbridge in reinforced concrete, which serves two purposes: on the one hand, it provides a pedestrian link between the city and the river, as well as a view over the Ticino flood plain (a reference to the old fortification wall that led down to the river). On the other, it provides access to the swimming-pool, the entrance to which is located at a middle level along with changing cubicles. It was particularly the way in which the swimming-pool and its range of uses is integrated into the terrain that attracted attention among specialists and made the building a kind of paradigm for more recent architecture in Ticino.
The exhibition “Il Bagno di Bellinzona di Aurelio Galfetti, Flora Ruchat-Roncati, Ivo Trümpy” is part of a series of exhibitions being organized by the Accademia di architettura and the Archivio del Moderno. The exhibition traces the history of the building’s origins and provides documentation on the competition, the implementation of the project and technical details of the actual construction.
An architecture monograph with the same title is being published by the Mendrisio Academy Press to accompany the exhibition. The Birkhäuser publishing company is also reissuing the survey “Tendenzen – Neuere Architektur im Tessin”.
