Now in its fourth decade, the Institute for Building Technology (HBT) at ETH Zürich has come to enjoy wide recognition in the areas of structural engineering and construction both at the Faculty of Architecture as well as in the Swiss building industry in general.
New challenges in teaching and research are emerging as a result of rapidly developing building processes and construction technologies, as well as the employment of digital technologies in design and production. The institute’s chairs have therefore collectively decided to expand and restructure their content focus. In line with these changes, the Institute for Building Technology (HBT) is to be renamed the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA).
The ITA and its chairs will form an independent institute that belongs to the Faculty of Architecture at ETH Zurich. The institute sees itself as a bridge between the architectural design studies and building process. Its diverse cooperations with various institutions, firms, organizations and authorities ensure sustainable development in the building industry.
The new ITA has committed itself to achieving the following three aims: First, to intensify the collaboration among the chairs both in teaching and in research; secondly, to foster a professionally competent and scientifically based integrated architectural design instruction; and thirdly, to serve in the building industry as the center for technology in architecture.
On the occasion of these changes, the ITA is planning to host various events at the start of the 2009 fall semester that will provide a glance at the institute’s teaching and research activities. Included will be an exhibition presenting the work of the ITA.
