The New Monte Rosa Hut SAC is one of fifty projects celebrating the 150th anniversary of the ETH Zurich. In close collaboration with the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), the project involved developing a sustainable building for the site in the high Alps (2883 m above sea level) in the Monte Rosa region. The ETH Zurich intends the building to serve as a model for the successful linkage of architecture with sustainability and modern technology. For the SAC, the building is a milestone in more than 145 years of the history of the Alpine hut. The project was made possible through support from numerous benefactors and sponsors. The New Monte Rose Hut SAC, a complex five-storey wooden building, is encased in a shining aluminium shell. The south façade includes a photovoltaic array that produces electricity. The building will be able to supply at least 90 per cent of its own energy. The project was developed on an interdisciplinary basis with students at the ETH Monte Rosa Studio and many participating specialists. To replace the existing hut, a new integrated solution was found that incorporates architectural expression, material implementation, energy supply, water storage, and sewage disposal. The exhibition presents a model of the hut on a scale of 1:10 and documents the project. It examines the planning and construction process, explains the underlying architectural and technological concept, and conveys an impression of the implemented building as a total system.
