Steel constructions combine technical innovation with remarkable virtuosity. This year, some outstanding examples have been awarded the fourth Swiss Steel Construction Prize ‘Prix Acier’ by the Swiss Steel Construction Centre (SZS).
The aim of the Prix Acier is to promote Swiss steel construction expertise and to raise awareness among a specialist audience, but also the public at large, of the technical potential and architectural expressiveness of steel construction. It is awarded for projects that showcase the architectural quality and technical capabilities of buildings in steel. Highlighting the broad spectrum of Swiss steel construction expertise, the award honours both spectacular designs, such as the Actelion Business Center, and more modest constructions such as the protective roof for an archaeological site in St. Maurice and the Langensand Bridge in Lucerne. This year, particular attention has been paid to the refurbishment and renovation of existing steel constructions. A total of 30 projects were submitted for consideration in 2011. The SZS specialist jury awarded the Prix Acier to three of them, with a further eight receiving special recognition. It also nominated a project for the European Steel Design Award, which is presented every two years for each country by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS).
