Plaster is regarded as a prestige material in contemporary construction. Modern rendered surfaces are generally produced using standard processes as part of systems incorporating façade insulation. But the material and aesthetic value of plaster extends far beyond its conventional applications. A research team at the ETH Zurich has investigated the creative diversity underlying the production of rendered surfaces – a topic that is still rarely taught at architectural schools.
The exhibition, based on the eponymous publication, showcases the remarkable breadth of plastering processes and techniques. Using numerous examples, it sets out to show that plaster is anything but homogeneous. Displayed together with the tools used to make them, the rendered panels reveal the relationship between granularity, material thickness and application technique, providing a practical demonstration of the different materials and surfaces. There are plaster-rendered surfaces from a wide range of sources: from recent productions – by firms such as Hild und K, Munich and the Zurich-based EM2N and Romero & Schaefle – to representatives of techniques both new and old, some of them rediscovered, created using detailed formulations developed and tested at the ETH Zurich. The items on display form a visible and tangible complement to the simultaneously published book containing in-depth information on plaster finishes.
An exhibition by the Institute gta in collaboration with the chair of Architecture and Technology Annette Spiro, Faculty of Architecture, ETH Zurich
