The International VELUX Award was presented for the fourth time in October 2010. This biennial competition for architecture students takes as theme “Light of Tomorrow.” The competition met with great interest: 673 applicants from 55 countries submitted designs. Sought were projects dealing in a particularly innovative way with the theme of natural light in the built environment. At a conceptual level, the projects should be convincing examples of the use of daylight.
First prize went to the project “Constellation of light fields” by four students from Hanyang University in Seoul. They impressed the international jury with their idea of controlling the incidence of light with the help of classical Möbius strips and with the aesthetic presentation of their contribution. Second place was shared by a Chinese student from the University of Technology in Delft in The Netherlands, with “Condensation of variational sunlight influences” and a group of three students at the Architecture School of Tianjin University in China, with “Lightscape between gaps.” Awarded in addition to the three main prizes were also eight honorable mentions. Among those receiving an honorable mention was ETH student Berte Daan, who is advised by Professor Christian Kerez.
The exhibition at ETH Zurich will present all prize-winning projects including those that received an honorable mention.
An exhibition by VELUX Schweiz AG, Trimbach, in collaboration with the Institute gta
