Architektur steht seit jeher im Dienst der Gesellschaft. Es ist noch nicht lange her, dass sie sogar als wesentliche Kraft beim Bau von Gesellschaften galt. Wie weit trägt diese Überzeugung heute noch? Die Frage drängt sich auf in einer Öffentlichkeit, die ihre Erwartungen an Architektur immer einseitiger auf Qualitäten wie formale Ausdruckskraft, Individualität und Wiedererkennbarkeit reduziert. Die Vortragsreihe des Departements Architektur an der ETH Zürich im Frühjahrssemester 2008 setzt einen Akzent gegen diese Wahrnehmung. Sie geht der sozialen Verpflichtung der Architektur nach und erörtert die kreativen Potentiale, die gesellschaftlich verantwortetes Bauen heute und in Zukunft freisetzen kann.
Architecture has always been serving the society. Not very long time ago it was even considered to be an important factor in the process of the construction of the societies. In which measure is this conviction still valid today? The question addresses the public view which focuses more and more on the architectural qualities like formal expression, individuality, and recognition. The lecture series of the spring semester 2008 at the Faculty of Architecture at the ETH Zurich sets a counterpoint to this biased perception, discussing on the social obligations of architecture and exploring the creative potentials, which socially responsible building can produce.
