What is it that a material – any material – transforms? As a synthetic product, concrete raises some particular questions about material transformation that reflect back on all other materials. Architectural applications of concrete often rest upon assumptions about distinctions between ‘natural’ and the man-made: yet concrete occupies an ambiguous place in this classification and often calls it into doubt. This talk will look at a wide range of examples that in various ways raise difficulties with the nature/culture distinction.

Adrian Forty (MA, PhD) is Professor of Architectural History at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. He is the author of "Objects of Desire" (1986), "Words and Buildings" (2000), and "Concrete and Culture" (forthcoming 2012). He is also the President of the European Architectural History Network.
