The Zurich architecture firm known as pool arose out of a discussion forum assembling young practitioners in the field of urban planning. This “pool” has now brought together eight partners, all of whom have made a name for themselves over the past decade with their undogmatic,
interdisciplinary work, take part in debates about architecture, and currently teach as guest lecturers at ETH Zurich.
pool buildings are not distinguished by a formal style; rather, they are the result of a series of encounters with the uses and material requirements of a given project, and have already won the architects numerous competitions. Among the office’s specialties is residential building, with several major complexes standing, such as those at Leimbachstrasse (2005), Aspholz (2007) and Blumenfeldstrasse (2008),
all in Zurich. The Lochergut commercial centre (2006) and the Badenerstrasse mixed-use complex (2010), both in Zurich, have also earned pool recognition.
The pool exhibition at the main campus of ETH Zurich is integrated into its specific spatial situation, with a suite of rooms on the ground floor creating its very own little world. The installation features selected projects, presented by means of plans, pictures and models.
The exhibition is accompanied by the appearance of pool: Work Journal 1998–2010 (gta Verlag), the first comprehensive, curated presentation of work by pool architects.
