André Patrão
Curriculum vitae
André Patrão is a Senior Researcher (Oberassistierende) at ETH Zürich, in the Chair of the History of Art and Architecture led by Philip Ursprung. He is also a researcher at the EPFL, in the Lab of Architecture, Criticism, History, and Theory.
Prior to these positions, André was a Lecturer and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Yale School of Architecture, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and hosted by Joan Ockman. His academic background includes a B.A. in Architecture from the University of Lisbon, an M.S. in Urban Design from Lund University, and both a B.A. and a M.A. in Philosophy from KU Leuven. He completed his Ph.D. at the EPFL in March 2020, under the supervision of Christophe van Gerrewey.
André's research focuses on historically significant moments of exchange between architects and philosophers, from the early 20th century to today. Studying the contexts that enabled such interactions, the intellectual ruptures they triggered, the methodological processes that brought them about, and ultimately their effects upon both disciplines, these investigations bring forth the consequential ways in which architecture and philosophy shaped one another and continue to do so now. His most recent work tackles contemporary issues of the built environment more broadly understood, through a combination of ethics, aesthetics, and political philosophy.
