Léa–Catherine Szacka (b.1979, Montréal) is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Architectural Studies at the University of Manchester and visiting tutor at the Berlage. In 2021-2022 she is Guest Academic at ETH Zurich.

Léa–Catherine Szacka studied architecture at Université de Montréal and the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) (Bsc, MArch) before embarking on a PhD in History and Theory of Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (PhD, 2012). Szacka’s work focuses on the history and theory of postmodern architecture, with a particular focus on media and curating.

Szacka is the author of Exhibiting the Postmodern: The 1980 Venice Architecture Biennale (Marsilio, 2016), for which she was awarded the 2017 Alice Davies Hitchcock Medallion by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB). She is also the author of Biennials/Triennials: Conversations on the Geography of Itinerant Display (Columbia Books on Architecture and the City, 2019) and co-author of Le Concert: Pink Floyd à Venise (B2, 2017), as well as co-editor of Mediated Messages: Periodicals, Exhibitions and the Shaping of Postmodern Architecture (Bloomsbury, 2018) and Concrete Oslo (Torpedo Book, 2018). Her writing appeared in Log, OASE, AA Files, AD, ARCH+, ATR, Volume, Art Papers, The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH) The Journal of Architectural Education (JAE), and The Journal of Architecture.Together with Silvia Micheli, she is completing the manuscript of Paolo Portoghesi: Architecture Between Media, History and Politics (Bloomsbury, forthcoming 2022).

Before joining the University of Manchester Szacka has taught at several schools of architecture in Paris (2011-2013), at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) (2013-2017) and was a visiting professor at the Harvard GSD Rotterdam studio abroad program (2018). Szacka has held several visiting fellowships, amongst others at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) (2010), the British School at Rome (2010), the Centre Pompidou (2011-2013), the Centre for Architecture Theory Criticism History in Brisbane (ATCH) (2015), and the Monash University Art Design & Architecture (2019).

Szacka is on the editorial board of Footprint Delft theory Review and Architectural History (SAHGB). Since 2020, she is also a Councillor for the European Architectural History Network (EAHN).
