Curriculum vitae
Gregorio Astengo is assistant at the Chair of the History and Theory of Architecture, focussing in both research and teaching on early modern architectural print culture.
Gregorio is an architect and historian. He graduated from Turin’s Polytechnic in 2012 and has been practicing in Italy between 2012 and 2014. In 2014 he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Architectural Research at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL and in 2019 he completed his PhD from the Bartlett, founded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership. His thesis examined the early years of the Philosophical Transactions, the journal of the Royal Society of London, as a way to investigate practices of architecture produced through early modern scientific methodologies and early forms of periodical printing.
Gregorio has been editor of the student-led architecture magazine Lobby between 2015 and 2017 and has been lecturing and publishing internationally on early modern and modern architecture. He was teaching assistant at UCL and Queen Mary (University of London), adjunct professor at Syracuse University London and lecturer at the New College of the Humanities. Since January 2023 Gregorio is a SNSF 'Postdoc Mobility' Fellow.
Gregorio is currently working on a research project entitled ‘Printing for the City-Builder. Speculative Housing in London and the emergence of the Building Guide (1650-1720)’. The research traces the rise of real estate culture in early modern London by examining the production and use of the building guide, a type of technical book dedicated to construction management, which emerged in the context of the 17th-century London building boom for a readership of prospective developers and speculators.
